Often homeowners take their roofs for granted, paying little to no attention to them…until some problems arise. The National Roofing Contractors Association advises homeowners to have their roofs checked at least twice a year. So it might be useful to know a few things to look for not to be taken off guard.
We suggest you start by checking the interior of your attic. Look for stains and signs of moisture.
2. Holes and cracks
Look for light coming through the roof. If you see the light coming in, contact the professional roofing contractor to see if it can be fixed or whether you need a roof replacement.
Keep an eye on the state of shingles. Check to see if any of the following damage is present:
- Missing shingles
- Loose, damaged or cracked shingles
- Curled shingle edges
- Missing shingle granules - sometimes they can be found in the gutters and downspouts
- Moss or algae - this usually means there’s excessive moisture which can potentially cause damage to your roof.
The top of your roof should be straight. If you see signs of curving or sagging it’s important to act quickly as this can mean that there’s structural damage. If you don’t want your roof to cave in, you might need a professional roofing contractor to help you fix that problem.
Be sure to check if there’s any damage around chimneys or skylights.
Check your gutters for debris clogging them and preventing them from functioning properly.
7. The age of your roof
If your roof is 20 years old or more, if it looks old and worn, then maybe it’s time to put a replacement on your to do list.
